Restoration brickwork
I have a particular fondness for old brickwork - sun-baked, rain-worn brickwork rich in history and character, with the golden glow of weathered lime mortar in the joints.
I have 12 years experience in working with:
- Brickwork: Period Brickwork, Gauge Brickwork, Curves & Arches, Curvilinear Piers...
- Professional Stone Cleaning: Doff Joss system for all types of stone cleaning prior to restoration work.
- Repointing: Lime Mortar, Tuck Pointing, Weathered, Beak, Reverse Struck, Penny Struck and Standard Jointed; Matching
Considerations for work:
- Carrying out restoration only where it is needed. For example, many fine old walls have been ruined by unsympathetic re-pointing, often applying Portland cement mortar to walls built with lime mortar, with disastrous results (see what I don't do.
- Where re-pointing really is necessary, the key is to match the original mortar, whether it is a hard, imminently hydraulic and also the coarseness of grit and the shades of sand need to be considered.
- Taking into account the the building's history and adopting correct procedures for recommending work.
The results of carrying unnecessary pointing, using the wrong materials, can be truly disastrous! Repointing with ordinary portland cement can lead to trapping moisture in the wall making it vulnerable to frost damage and ruining it's appearance.
