The environment - my commitment
I believe our environment matters. For that reason I always endeavour to minimise the environmental imnpact of my work, and of the homes I help to build:
- Re-using bricks and blocks: I always aim to save any usable bricks or blocks from demolitions, or already present on site, and use them a second time round. The production of bricks and blocks involves mining raw materials and high temperature firing, so by reducing materials use, we are saving resources for future generations and reducing the use of fossil fuels.
- Recycling rubble: I always aim to use any rubble on site, for example in building foundations or sub-floors. This minimises the mining of virgin aggregates, and extends the life of landfill sites.
- Super-insulated walls: by building external walls to a high thermal standard, the use of energy in the resulting building will be reduced, and thermal comfort improved in both winter and summer.
- Waste disposal: where waste material need to be removed, such as waste soil from excavating foundations, I aim to keep it "clean" from other waste so that it may be re-used by the waste company providing the skip, for example in landscaping. In many cases this will also reduce the cost of the skip as its contents will not go to landfill.
- Recycling off-site: where possible, I will try to recycle waste from your site on another site that I or a colleague is working on. For example, if one site is generating a surplus of rubble from demolition, or topsoil from excavations, I will try to find another job where rubble is needed for groundworks, or topsoil for raised beds.
- Building to last: I believe in building to last, using high quality materials and workmanship so that your new building won't just end up as tomorrow's rubble - wasting your money and the Earth's scarce resources.
- Running a tidy site: I promise not to use your garden (or house) for long-term storage of ever-growing mountains of waste. I clean up at the end of every day and try to make sure that life can go on as usual around my work - because your environment matters too!
